Towards a Competency Framework for Innovation Management
WORKSHOP co-hosted by ISPIM Body of Knowledge SIG & Innovation Leadership SIG
April 5th, 2023, at 15:00-16:30 CET by Zoom (online meeting only).
Is the innovation management discipline and profession at a tipping point? The ISO 56000 series of international standards provide guidance on leading, managing, and organizing innovation efforts and building innovation capabilities. As more organizations of all sizes and from all sectors and economies seek to innovate, the demand for leaders and managers who can effectively promote and drive innovation activities is growing.
The World Economic Forum includes innovation in its list of the top 10 skills for 2025, and recruiters increasingly cite “innovation skills” as a top requirement, but there is little consensus as to what the ideal “innovation skills” actually are, what level of competency is required, or how essential, desirable, or useful each skill is.
In this workshop, we will discuss the prerequisites for developing an internationally agreed competency framework for innovation management and explore the role of innovation leadership within this framework. The following are examples of questions that will be discussed and reflected upon:
- What are the target groups or roles for such a framework, for example, leaders, managers, innovators, consultants, and professionals?
- What are the benefits for these groups or roles and their organizations of an internationally agreed framework?
- What are the key skills and competency levels required by individuals of each specific target group or role?
- Are there other so called ‘soft skills’, attributes, or behaviors that should be considered during the creation of an innovation competency framework?
- Are there any existing competency frameworks for innovation activities or in other disciplines that can inspire and inform the continued international work?
This is the first of several ISPIM workshops. The work will continue at the ISPIM conference in June 2023. The purpose of the workshops is to gather insights from a broad community of practitioners and academics as input to a proposal for a new international standardization activity to be part of the ISO 56000 series. The work is planned to start in the second half of 2023.
The introduction to the workshop is provided by Charlie Tuxworth, ISO TC 279 WG1 member. Joanne Hyland, Vilho Jonsson, and Magnus Karlsson, ISPIM Body of Knowledge SIG co-leaders and ISO TC 279 WG1 members, are facilitating the workshop.
Who can participate? Members of ISPIM, IAOIP, ISO TC 279, and other relevant innovation management organizations.
Welcome!
